Cleveland Bay is Britain’s oldest breed of horse. They have ample bone and substance, are hardy, long lived and possess tremendous stamina. They are always bay in colour. Their action is level, free and long striding. Characteristically the breed is honest and bold.
It is a popular family horse, is most versatile, having the ability to work under saddle and in harness.
As a carriage horse it is unsurpassed. Both pure and part breds can be seen competing in FEI teams the most notable was probably that of HRH Prince Phillip won international acclaim with his team of pure CB and CB x Oldenburg horses. Many can be found in the Royal Mews as this breed continues to be bred by Her Majesty The Queen for ceremonial work.
Coe End Farm Stud was fortunate to receive on loan for breeding purposes the last surviving member of HRH Prince Philip’s team “ Hampton Court Lady Of Man”. This mare was one of those bred by breeding an Oldenburg mare to a Cleveland Stallion. Her offspring remain at Coe End and are being bred back to the Oldenburg using high quality Performance Tested Oldenburg stallions.
Part Bred Cleveland’s are sought after. The most popular outcross (as it is for any other breed) is the TB but crossed with the TB or a European Warmblood the breeding produces high quality versatile horses eminently suitable for all equestrian disciplines.
As an established breed it breeds true to type. This factor, together with close supervision of the Stud Book and regular inspection of licensed colts and stallions virtually guarantees the breeds pre-potency.
In the past stallions were exported to improve native stock and to reintroduce bone and substance. Consequently many continental breeds have had the benefit of Cleveland blood.
